Doctors & Staff

Meet the experienced and friendly doctors and staff who make Medina Eye Center the leading provider of vision care products and services in Castroville.

Dr.BurgesDr. Wm. R. Burges

Medina Eye Center began as Wm. R. Burges, O.D. in 1976. As the area has grown, so has the practice. In 2008 Dr. Burges moved to his current location, into a building specifically designed for the needs of his patients. To reflect the growing community and the increased ability to provide a more complete range of eye care needs, the name of the practice was changed to Medina Eye Center. New, state-of-the-art equipment was added to enable Dr. Burges to test for a variety of eye health and vision conditions including glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinal detachments and tumors, melanoma of the back of the eye, some types of brain tumors, and certain neurological conditions. Our equipment continues to be updated in order to provide our patients with the highest quality care available. At Medina Eye Center we give you the quality of care you can expect to find in a big city but with the personalization of a small town where our patients are not a number to us but a person.

Dr. Burges grew up in Castroville and returned home to practice after graduating from the University of Houston College of Optometry in 1976. In 1992 he was among the first optometrists in Texas to become certified in therapeutic treatment of eye diseases. In 2000 he was again in the first group of Texas O.D.’s to become Optometric Glaucoma Specialists. In addition to providing full scope eye care, including contact lenses, Dr. Burges has long had an interest in children’s vision and learning problems. He has served as a consultant to a number of school districts in South Texas. He has made several mission trips to Nicaragua and Costa Rica where he both examined eyes and dispensed glasses for those who could not afford eye care. He also regularly volunteers at Haven for Hope in San Antonio, providing eye care for the homeless and residents of the battered women’s shelter.

When not busy at the office, Bill likes to do a little fishing, work with the Boy Scouts, and along with the best wife in the world, Mary Lou, visit the five best children in the world and their families.
